• DESCRIPTION OF SERVICES: Area Board IX is one of thirteen area Boards established by the State Lanterman Developmental Services Act to protect and advocate for the legal, civil and service rights of persons with developmental disabilities. In addition, Area Board IX conducts public information and education programs; encourages development of needed programs and services; reviews policies and practices of publicly funded agencies providing services to persons with developmental disabilities; supplies data and information on available services, needs and priorities; encourages establishment of citizen advocacy organizations to assist persons in using services and participating in community activities; cooperates with and makes policy recommendations to coordinating, planning and government groups to enhance the lives of persons with developmental disabilities and coordinates activities to prevent duplication and fragmentation of services.
